SPEAKER: Colonel Nick Hubbell

TOPIC: “The requirements for Special Forces qualification, training, employment and the history of the Green Berets.”

Enlisted in the Army:  29 July 1966.

Attended Infantry Officer Candidate School at Ft Benning, GA.  Graduated 1967.    Deployed to Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division in 1967-1968.  Served as a platoon leader.

Volunteered for a second tour with the 173d Airborne Brigade as a platoon leader.

Returned to the U.S. to attend Special Forces training at Ft Bragg, NC. 

Left active duty in 1970 and transferred to the reserves. Later, commanded a Combat Engineer company and, from 1987 to 1990, commanded a Special Forces battalion.  Also commanded a training brigade in the 78th Division. The last assignment was as the reserve component deputy chief of staff for operations at the Army Special Operations Command, Ft Bragg, NC.  Retired as a Reserve Colonel in 1997 with 31 years of total Army service.

His awards include:  the Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge and Air Assault Badge, the Special Forces Tab and the Canadian Parachutist Badge.

Colonel Hubbell was installed in the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame in 1999. In civilian life, he served 36 years as a federal civil servant and retired in 2008 as the Director of Operations of the Army Evaluation Center.
