November Nature Club – ECHO Global Farm & Appropriate Technology Tour
Date: November 10, 2021
17391 Durrance Road, North Fort Myers, FL 33917
Meet at ECHO Global Farm at 9:15 a.m.
Come on an exciting trip to the ECHO Global Farm. The Global Farm is anything but typical. Through our tour, you’ll experience farming at its most creative, with unique demonstrations, plants, and techniques being used to help farmers and urban gardeners in developing countries. There are seven different settings on our farm, with crops, techniques, and animals from around the world. ECHO is home to one of the largest collections of tropical food plants in the United States. Plus, our Urban Garden is a tour standout, with some unconventional, but effective ways to grow crops where there’s little to no soil.
Our Anderson Appropriate Technology Center is applied science at its best. Our facility is a unique working space focused on demonstrating, researching, and building tools/techniques that solve problems for small-scale farmers around the world. In this tour, you’ll discover how simple technologies from local or recycled materials can improve food, water, and shelter for millions of people. These technologies include transforming sand into water filters, manure into energy, and bicycles into power tools. Beyond technical ingenuity, you’ll learn how food goes from the field to the market, and how we’re using simple solutions to change lives.
Note: if you have been on my tour of the farm before, this one combines the technology tour as well, which we did not do a few years ago.
